  • SPOTLIGHT:
    Richmond Announced
as a Finalist in Best Tennis Town Contest

Richmond has been named one of the top ten finalists in the Best Tennis Town in America contest sponsored by the United States Tennis Association. Richmond’s bid, coordinated on behalf of the city by the Richmond Tennis Association, was selected by a national committee as one of top ten candidates from cities across the nation. The other finalists include: Atlanta, GA, Charleston, SC; Beaverton, OR; Rosemount, MN; Clearwater, FL; Delray Beach, FL; Rome, GA; Snow Hill, NC; and Manchester Center, VT. The top three finishers will be determined by online voting, which begins at noon on Friday, July 16 and runs through July 26 at www.besttennistown.com, and the winner will be announced during a special ceremony in Arthur Ashe Stadium during the U.S. Open in September. In addition to national bragging rights as “Best Tennis Town,” the winning city will also receive a $100,000 prize to support tennis programs and facilities in the community. Second and third place finishers will receive $50,000 and $25,000, respectively.

“As the nucleus of the Richmond tennis community, it was a no-brainer for the RTA to take the lead in organizing this monumental, collaborative effort,” says RTA Vice President and local business attorney Eric Perkins. “We had a team of volunteers working around the clock on this project, coordinating efforts with the Mayor’s office, the City Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities Department, and many others. Our first goal was to make it to the top ten, and now that we have achieved that, we are appealing to everyone in the Richmond community and throughout the region to jump online and vote for Richmond.”
